Bioremediation

A solution for pollution and environmental toxins.

The goal of this program is to develop and mentor youth “community scientist” who will apply a technique known as bioremediation to degrade toxins found in the soil in the local neighborhoods of South Los Angeles and Watts.  These areas known as “toxic hot spots” within our neighborhoods have a higher level of heavy metals, PAH Polycyclic aromic hydrocarbons, and  PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) at levels higher than the EPA recommended limits. We will use compost and drought resistant plants from the Seeds of Carver Community Garden to distribute a consortium of microbes and plants known to degrades toxins found throughout South Los Angeles neighborhoods and playgrounds.

In collaboration with Saving the West

We piloted at 5-week children’s gardening program with the non-profit organization “Saving the West”.  The children in our program learned how to germinate seed, tend to the garden, and harvest produce.  This program not only taught children about gardening but it also provided a safe outdoor play space.
